Snap Spectacles

Introduction

Recently, Snapchat has rebranded itself as Snap Inc. and released plans for their new Snap Spectacles- a pair of glasses with wide-angle, circular video capturing capabilities. This allows for a fuller view than the regular smartphone camera, and a way to "see a memory in the way you experienced it", as the company said in their blog post.

Comparisons were immediately made to a previous wearable model, Google Glass (you can see my blog post about that here).  While Glass was modeled as an extension of nearly every feature of a regular smartphone, Snap Spectacles are meant to work only with the Snapchat app. It is simple and designed to be fashionable- aspects that Google Glass lacked, and likely contributed to its failure. While Glass sold for upwards of $1,500, Spectacles are planned to launch with an initial price-tag of $130. Each product will come with a charging case, and a full charge is said to last approximately a day.

How it works

With very little information available on the specifics as of now, I can only comment on the basic capabilities. For instance, the device will have a button or touchpad to begin recording video on the left side. This will trigger a circular series of lights around the camera lens to indicate that the device is recording. This will last 10 seconds, and then the information gathered will be sent to the device paired with Spectacles via Bluetooth or WiFi connection. In pseudocode, this might look something like:

while the device is on/has charge:
if the button is pushed or touch is registered:
if a connection is made to the external device:
                 turn lights on
                 begin recording sequence
                 send information to paired device
          else:
prompt user to pair a device with an error light

The information sent to the device will be stored in the "Memories" section of the Snapchat app, which the user can then post to their story or save to their phones camera roll.

  1. Snap Inc says that Spectacles enable one to go back and see his or her favorite memory the way he or she experienced it. Definitely, Snap Spectacles are an amazing innovation. However, one can just record up to 30 seconds at a time. I think if this could be longer, Spectacles would be much better. By the way, the algorithms you write truly helpful to me in understanding how Spectacles work!

  2. Hey Ryan,
Check out Metaprogramming and my blog on it and you could see the connection between certain instances where snapchat has to create memory in a device to store further pictures and how metaprogramming can self -create programs to clear storage space in phones.

  3. Very interesting blog Ryan! These glasses seem really cool and pretty groundbreaking for the technology world. However, I do wonder how law enforcement will react to some people who may try to drive with these on as I could imagine that would be very dangerous. In addition to pedestrians walking in busy cities with an increased potential of being hit by a car. Have you heard anything about how the federal government feels about this technology?

    1. I haven't seen any reaction regarding that. I'm not sure how serious the risk may be since there isn't a visual display like Google Glass had (as far as I'm aware), but that's a good point!

  4. Im curious to see how or if these glasses catch on. it didnt seem like google glass did but then again that could be becuase they were so expensive compared to these. I really liked how you used if else statements to explain how the glasses work, you did a good job of connecting your post with what we have been doing in class
